Yesterday we loaded up and met some friends at the beach. They took Lucy with them and got there before us and set everything up while we were at home with Will who was snoozing. We knew he wouldn't be up for a full day of the beach, so we met them there a bit later. It was hot. (I know I talk about it being HOT here a lot. It is.)
We sat Will under the tent in the middle of all the adults. And after lunch, as we were all sitting around, 6 adults under the shade of the tent at the beach with the 3 bigger kids playing in the beautiful ocean, I looked at them and said,
"When did we become so adult that we just sit here and don't even play in the ocean?"
A few minutes later, I sunscreened up - very lightly, unfortunately - and headed into the ocean with Lucy and her two friends (Micah, 4 & Morgan, 6)
Two hours later, we're all sunburned, but man, we had such a fun time! And I just kept thinking while I was out there about all the amazing memories I have from my own childhood with my granddad playing with me in the ocean or pool; my grandmom walking along with me and picking up seashells; my step-dad playing with me in the pool and making me feel like a gymnast when he let me stand on his shoulders and jump off... PRECIOUS memories.
And I can only hope and pray that I helped make some of those memories for Lucy, Micah, and Morgan yesterday.
Lord, let me never ever miss an opportunity to play with my children. Let me never ever be too busy or too "adult" to take the opportunities you put in front of me to invest in them by simply playing with them! What a joy! What a fleeting time of life!
