I've Done It...

I've boldly gone where I never thought I'd go before...

I MADE PLAYDOUGH TODAY!

There is, of course, and explanation for all this. There are really 2 starting points for this tale.

First: I hate playdough. It totally grosses me out. I mean, gagging, grosses me out. It all started at an innocent SS lunch a few years back when Brad and I were in a young married SS class. One of the couples had kids - at least 2, can't remember specifics now. We went to Ruby Tuesdays. Yum. We were all sitting there, having a wonderful lunch, getting to know each other, when the aforementioned couple's children started getting a bit restless. So, being the great mom she was/is, she pulled out these mini playdoh containers and let the kiddo that was sitting on her lap start playing with it at the table. (I think I was either next to her or across from her.) Kiddo had a straw. She started poking it into the playdoh. You know where this is going... and my stomach is turning writing it/thinking about it... She got it stuck in the straw, naturally. When she couldn't get it out, she handed the straw to the mom, who was in conversation with me and Brad at this point, and the mom, without hesitation or second thought, put the straw up to her mouth and sucked the playdoh out! BLAH!!!! GROSS!!!! I almost puked right then and there. BLAH.

Second: Lucy is bored. I can't really blame her. We spend almost all day, every day in our 1600 sq ft apartment. It's a wonderful apartment, but I know she's bored. But it's too dang hot outside right now to go out and do stuff - and I understand that my following in Alabama can relate to this heat now - so we stay in. We've only got a little less than a month now for us to be here, all day, every day, before we move. (I'm SO READY TO MOVE!) After that, there will be more people to play with, more things for an 18 month old to do. She's bored. And I'm trying to be an amazing mom.

So, I'm on the internet some while she's napping trying to figure out some fun activities. I've been toying with the idea of gross playdough for a few days now. And today when we went to the mall for lunch and then to Toys R Us, I actually stopped and looked at the real PlayDoh. (Me to Brad: "Wow. You know I'm desperate for activities when I stop and look at PlayDoh!" Brad agrees with me. He remembers the incident from above.)

We came home from the mall, put Lucy down. Brad is napping, too. And I did it. I made it. I think I was able to do it because it's homemade playdough and I know it's really only flour, salt, oil, and water. Easy, right? We'll see how I do when/if Lucy tries to eat it... BLAH.

I also made some Bath crayons! Very easy recipe!
They have to dry for a few days before we can use them. But it's only a bar of soap that I grated, some warm water, and some food coloring. Nice, huh? And I put it in a mini muffin mold. We'll see how these work out and if they're a success, I'll try with cookie cutters!

I found all this on a really cool website called mormonchic.com. Yes. I know. It's an LDS sight. But, while I think their "theology" is from mars, they've got some good ideas for entertaining the little ones at home! :)

I'll do an update after we use the homemade red playdough and the homemade blue bath crayons!

  1. haha! What a funny post. I love the idea of bath time crayons! I'm totally gonna do it. Hazel's been using these little bath colors at my mom's, and loves them. Now I know what I can do at my house for cheaper!
I'm with you on the Play Dough. Is it bad that Hazel is inching up on 3 and has NEVER played with the stuff? Do I lose Fun Mom Points?
